Salz: Cellphone coverage at Rexall Place getting better for some people
If you want to be able to Facebook, Instagram, and Tweet from an Edmonton Oilers game with
ease, you might want to switch to Rogers. This had occurred to me a few games ago, as I’m with another carrier, when I tried to tweet from Rexall Place during a game. I turned to my mom and said I swear people with Rogers get better service in here, I can’t do anything. It made me wonder how the Oilers expect fans to connect with them if they can’t get any service in the darn place. To be honest, I didn’t actually think that people with Rogers got better service, but as I would find out, I was wrong. Friday night I was invited by Rogers and Samsung to test out their new trio of smart-watches and the Samsung Galaxy 5 before the Oil took on the Anaheim Ducks. With my iPhone 5 and non-Rogers service, I became increasingly frustrated when I couldn’t tweet anything, while the Rogers' reps seemed to have no problem at all. Side note, don’t tweet a picture of yourself trying out a Samsung device from your iPhone, you’ll be mocked. The new partnership between Rogers and the Edmonton Oilers has meant plenty of perks for fans, including lockable charging stations, and apparently better service for Rogers customers. The Rogers rep told me that since the deal came down late last year, she’s seen a noticeable difference in speed. She had LTE service in the basement – I could barely get two bars in my seat. While part of me is annoyed that being with a different cellphone carrier means I can’t tweet as fast as I’d like, it’s also an incredibly smart move by Rogers and the Oilers. I wonder if there are any fans that would actually consider switching so they’d have better service. If I had season tickets, I’d probably consider it. We’ve become very impatient in this digital world, haven’t we? As the newer, better, and faster devices and services come out, we can’t stand if we have to wait. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has held my phone in the air, hoping to somehow catch a random signal wave. Just me? Alright, moving on. In any case, I must thank the folks at Rogers and Samsung for inviting me to the game and showing off the new Samsung. Honestly it made me miss my old phone; I switched to an iPhone when I got an iPad, but maybe I’ll switch back. Between the service and the device, the two companies have me contemplating a switch in carriers and phones. Well played you two, well played. Just a reminder that I’d love to connect with you on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WordPress, feel free to look me up and shoot me a message. I’m also interested in hearing your ideas on any topics you’d like me to explore, feedback is always welcome. I’ll catch you later ‘tweeps. allison.salz@sunmedia.ca @SUNAllisonSalz
